Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2012, Vol 5, Issue 21
Abstract
Compound verbs are an issue of the Turkic languages that is not yet completely cleared up through their historical development. In this study, the descriptive verbs included in the book titled Kutadgu Bilig, which was written in the 11th century in Karakhanid Turkish, in order to contribute to the solution of this issue. This historical work, which is significant for Turcology in terms of the linguistic material, is also diverse and rich in terms of the descriptive auxiliary verbs. Seventeen verbs of this type have been detected. The descriptive auxiliary verbs are the verbs that are generally formed by combination of two verbs (called main and auxiliary verbs) and that establish a semantic union. While the main verb generally maintains the basic meaning and is conjugated with the gerund suffixes, the auxiliary verb that is in the finite state loses its real meaning and assumes a semantic function. Thereby, the auxiliary verbs express different actions.
