Determination of knowledge and anxiety levels of the fathers of the children who will undergo surgical intervention

Abstract

Aim: Surgical intervention is a stressful for the children and their parents. The study was carried out in to determine information and anxiety levels of the father of the children who will undergo surgical intervention. Method: The population of the study comprised 180 fathers who accepted to attend this study between 1 March - 31 June 2017 in university hospital in Karabük . The data were collected with the descriptive data form and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.  Number, mean, standard deviation, Anova  and t tests were used in the analysis. Results: The study determined that 73,3% of the fathers were aged between 31-40, 57,2% of the fathers were high school graduates, 89,4% had 1-3 children, 35,5% of the children were the 3rd children, adenoid and tonsillectomy were performed in 34,4% of their children . It was determined that 84,4% of the fathers had a previous hospital experience, and the information about the surgical process was provided to the fathers by surgeon at 66,7%.  The study determined that 42,8% of the fathers experienced anxiety for unsuccessful surgical intervention, while 28,9% of the fathers anxiety for not knowing home care.  The state scale point average of the fathers was 56,57±13,11,  trait scale point average was 50,99±10,36 with a medium level anxiety. While there was no significant difference between the ages of the fathers and the scale points (p>0.05), there was a significant difference between the gender of the children and the state and trait anxiety point averages of the fathers (p>0.05). There was no significant difference found between pre-operative information of the fathers and State-Anxiety Scale scores (p>0.05).  Conclusion: The father of the children who underwent surgical intervention was anxious. It is recommended to perform nursing interventions so as to eliminate fathers’ anxiety within the framework of a family-centered approach for the children that undergo surgical intervention.
