Determining the Main Problems Encountered in Kiwi Growing with Factor and Probit Analyses: The Case of Rize Province

Journal Title: İşletme Ekonomi ve Yönetim Araştırmaları Dergisi - Year 2018, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

Twenty-three countries produce kiwifruit in the world as of the year 2017, and China’s production accounts for more than 50% of the world production. Other leading countries that produce kiwifruit are Italy, New Zealand, Iran, Chile, Greece, France, Turkey and the United States. The share of these nine countries in world production is 98%. Starting with trials in various regions in Turkey in the 2000s, the kiwifruit production is made in twenty-three provinces of Turkey, primarily in the Black Sea Region, including the Marmara, Aegean, and Mediterranean Regions as of the year 2017. 45% of the kiwifruit production in Turkey is made in Yalova, 14% in Rize, 11% in Ordu, 5% in Samsun, 4% in Trabzon, and 4% in Giresun provinces. The share of these six provinces in total kiwi production in Turkey is 83%. The production in these cities has increased from 7 tons to about 40-45 tons in the past 25 years. However, due to some problems in kiwifruit production in the Eastern Black Sea Region, especially in Rize and Ordu provinces, there has been a significant decline in kiwifruit yield in the past five years. This study aims to form the main factors by identifying the problems encountered in kiwifruit production by the businesses in Rize province and reducing these problems with factor analysis. Thus, the goal is to determine what to do to eliminate the problems of each main factor. To do this, 100 individuals chosen according to the proportional sampling method in 5 counties of Rize province, where kiwifruit production is the highest, were interviewed in 2017. For this reason, the businesses in all the counties producing kiwifruit other than Pazar County should be informed adequately to minimize the income and organizational problems. Also, seminars should be given by universities and research institutes to increase the knowledge and experience of producers so that the production losses of the individuals who produce kiwifruit in these counties can be minimized and products high in yield, quality, and price can be obtained.
