DETRITAL INDICATORS OF STABILITY OF THE RESERVAL FORESTS OF THE CARPATHIANS

Abstract
The problem of conservation and providing stability of climax forests is associated with the sustainability and ecological capacity of their buffer surroundings. The Ukrainian-Slovak protected object “Carpathian Beech Forests” covers the total area of 77,971.6 ha, some 29,278.9 ha of which are protected areas, and 48,692.7 ha are the buffer zones. Above 70% of these forest lands are situated within the boundaries of the Ukrainian Carpathians. As a criterion of metabolism stability the method of numerical ratios has been used, enabling the estimation of the difference based on the condition of detrital resource. This resource includes the data both on litter and annual arboreal falloff reserves, and on the value of litter-falloff index as well. Next, the type of mort-mass decomposition is determined. The index of substrate stability of detritus is determined by the ratio between lignin and hemicellulose content. The trends towards the active or the potential types of stability are determined on the basis of index ratio between “L” layer and “F” or “F+H” layers. The litter-falloff index has a meaning of typological index of small circulation. The ratio index between mort-mass (mass sum of aboveground falloff, root falloff, litter, dead animal bodies etc.) and the humus organic matter of soil in the landscape biochemical cycle system (ecotope) becomes valid as well. The method of estimating ecological stability of old beech forests in the Carpathians and in adjacent buffer areas gives the possibility to obtain the approximate but quite convincing expert criteria of sustainability. All protected areas of Ukraine just belong to this kind of transformed biogeocenoses. The above stated methods allow us to make unbiased estimation of risks of further existence of forests in unstable buffer surroundings. By means of these criteria it is possible to reveal the trend of changes in stability indices, what is very important on early stages of decision-making.
