Development and characterization of Cassia acutifolia effervescent tablets
Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 9
Abstract
Since ancient times Cassia acutifolia plant extract has been used in traditional or herbal medicine. The leaves contain anthraquinone glycosides that have a significant laxative effect. Purposes of this study was extraction of cassia acutifolia leaves and formulate effervescent tablets using the cassia acutifolia leaves extract (10mg) as the active ingredient with other tableting excipients like Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), Talc powder, magnesium esterase, saccharin, polyethylene glycols (PEG), citric acid, tartaric acid and sodium bicarbonate as formulations F1, F2 and F3.Effervescent tablets liberate carbon dioxide when added to water thus facilitates tablets disintegration and dissolutions. The tablets were then subjected for evaluation testing like: hardness test, weight variation, disintegration time/ effervescent time, friability test, content uniformity test and pH. F1 was found with good result. Results obtained were: hardness test (6.8 kg / cm2), weight variation (503±0.02), disintegration time (58.9 s), friability test (0.74 %), content uniformity test (99.00 %) and pH (5.5). The values obtained indicate the effervescent comply with the pharmaceutical standards set by British Pharmacopoeia (BP) and United States Pharmacopoeia (USP). These tablets can be used as an alternative source of laxative medicine.
