Development and Validation of Contemporary Dance Module: Basis for Skills Enhancement of Special Program for the Arts Dance Major

Abstract
This design research aimed to develop a Contemporary dance module as basis for skills enhancement of the Special Program for the Arts dance major. The respondents of this study were 33 teachers from all over Region VI for identifying least mastered competencies, 44 dance major students for the implementation and validation, and 11 dance instructors and 5 curriculum development instructors who serves as experts in validation of the dance module. The data gathering instruments were researcher-made questionnaire, students', teacher implementers' and, experts' evaluation questionnaire. Data analysis techniques employed were frequency count, mean, standard deviation, Kruskal Wallis H test, and Mann Whitney U test. The study revealed that there were 10 least mastered competencies identified by SPA teachers. These were: (1) discuss the personalities of contemporary dance, (2) execute advanced technique to the students, (3) use varied floor exercises, (4) explain the history of contemporary dance, (5) choreograph pieces, (6) lead warm up exercises (barre or floor), (7) demonstrate barre exercises properly, (8) follow ballet syllabus as basis of your dance class, (9) perform liftings and other assisted skills, and (10) use varied barre exercises. The validity of the developed dance module as evaluated by the students, teacher implementers, and experts in general and in terms of objectives and content was rated ―Very High‖ while assessment was rated ―Very High‖. Significant differences were also noted in the evaluation. It was found out that teacher implementers have significantly higher evaluation than the students and experts, and experts' evaluation was also significantly higher than the students. Thus, a well-functioning sequence through analysis of the dance module was observed, and the researcher was able to develop an effective, ready and usable instructional materials that can be utilized in the classroom to enhance the skills of SPA dance major students.
