Development of Drag Reduction System for Formula Racing Car

Abstract

In order to reduce the big aerodynamic drag generated by fixed rear wing of the racing car, a drag reduction system ( DRS) was developed. The aerodynamic simulation of the racing car was carried out. The linkage executing mechanism consisted of a high torque steering engine was designed. A system controller based on embedded technology were fabricated. The results show that the DRS reduces the aerodynamic drag of the racing car by 17. 4%, and transforms the attacking angle of the rear wing flap rapidly from 45° to 5°. When the steering engine rotates 60°, the conversion time is just 0. 1 s.
