Development of the Knowledge of Mathematics Teaching Through the Textbook Review Course

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the pre-service teachers' development with reference to the practices implemented within the framework of the Textbook Review Course pertaining to their field. The content of the Textbook Review Course is organized to support teaching knowledge in addition to reviewing the book. In the study, the pre-service teachers developed a lesson plan in interaction with the rest of the group, and presented the lesson plan they came up with to both their classmates at the university, and to students at a school. The pre-service teachers were given an open-ended question in the final exam, asking for an evaluation of the practices applied during the course. The answers provided by the pre-service teachers in response to this question were analyzed using content analysis technique. The analysis revealed that the majority of the pre-service teachers learned through the course about what to take into account when planning a lesson, had an opportunity to witness the effectiveness of the lesson plan with the students, got a robust experience of teaching profession, and came to realize how crucial it is to reach down to the level of the students and to understand their actual level of proficiency.
