Dextrometorphan - a drug characteristics

Abstract
Dextromethorphan is an effective antitussive agent for treating uncomplicated, nonproductive cough. Dextromethorphan is as effective as codeine. The advantages of dextromethorphan compared to codeine include a lower rate of gastrointestinal disturbances and less drug dependency. Dextromethorphan as an NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) antagonist has shown analgesic effects. The resulting safety profile indicates that adverse drug reactions are infrequent and usually not severe. The predominant symptoms are usually dose related and include neurological, cardiovascular or gastrointestinal disturbances. Dextromethorphan taken in conjunction with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or serotonin re-uptake inhibitors may result in a serotonin syndrome. The safety profile of dextromethorphan is affected by episodic and sporadic abuse.
