Diagnostic role of mean platelet volume in cases presenting with thrombocytopenia in a tertiary health care setting of Puducherry

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: Platelet are membrane bound discoid structure that plays a crucial role in hemostasis. Thrombocytopenia is the reduction in the peripheral blood platelet count below150000 / mm3 after control of preanalytical and analytical variablesAim: To study the diagnostic role of Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) in discriminating the causes the Thrombocytopenia. Material and Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was done involving 347 cases of thrombocytopneia. Patients with history of Blood Transfusion and thrombocytopenia of unknown origin were excluded in this study. Mean was calculated and one-way ANOVA test was used for different clinical conditions. Results: Of 347 cases studied, 210 (60.5%) cases were categorized as hyperdestructive thrombocytopenia (TCP), 135 (38.9%) cases as hypoproductive TCP and abnormal Pooling 2 (0.57%) cases. High MPV was seen in ITP(12.1±0.75), Pregnancy(11.3±0.26) and cardiac diseases(10.95±0.85), while a low MPV observed in anemia(6.12±0.25), metastasis(6.42±0.29) and leukemia(6.86±1.14).Conclusion: MPV is extremely useful in discriminating the different thrombocytopenic states and also tend to be more reliable marker of diagnosis and prognosis of many diseases.
