DIALECT AS ENGLISH-UKRAINIAN LITERARY TRANSLATION ISSUE

Abstract

This paper deals with the problems of dialects interpretation in the English-Ukrainian literary translation, of dialects translatability and the strategies of their translation. In order to define the notion of "dialect" and distinguish the features relevant for the dialects interpretation, the works of domestic and foreign linguists and translators concerning the peculiarities of the dialecticism structure at different linguistic levels and their functioning in the speech are analyzed. The issue of dialects translatability is considered, the opinions of translator-skeptics, who claim the impossibility of dialects interpretation by means of other languages as well as translators theorists and practitioners’, who claim the principal dialects translatability, are considered. It is specified, that the argumentation in favor of the dialects untranslatability add up to the impossibility of the dialect interpretation within one language into that of the other (within the strategy of domestication), which is explained by the lack of equivalence relations between the dialects of different languages, as well as the relations of incomplete equivalence between the sublanguages of different social classes within a single national language. Consequently, the neutralization of dialectal speech in the translation is thought to be the best way of interpretation (J. Catford, L. Berezowski). Among the ways of dialecticisms interpretation, suggested by the translators-practitioners, we can note 1) the strategy of domestication (the "third world translation model" by A.&G. de Campos, dialect interpretation through "equivalent regional dialect" proposed by J. Catford, using substitution and rusticalization strategies by L. Berezowski), 2) the strategy of foreignization (the so-called "resistant" method of translation by L.Venuti, lexicalization method proposed by L. Berezowski), 3) functional approach, namely a) through the dialect translation with surzhik (proposed by O. Rebriy, so-called "creative solution" within the functional-normative and psycho-linguistic approach, b) through the use of a "functional analogue", or with the help of "artificial language- in-language" creation (by O. Borisenko) c) translation with the vernacular or colloquial vocabulary (I. Aleksyeyeva, L. Berezowski, S. Vlakhov, J. Catford) and (d) through corresponding compensation at the morphological and syntactical, as well as phonological levels (N. Yakovlyeva).
