Different Control Algorithms for Single- Phase UPQC-a simulation study

Abstract
This paper employs a single-phase unified power quality conditioner (UPQC), an integration of shunt and series active power filters (APFs), for power factor correction and mitigation of voltage and current harmonics. Both the shunt and series APFs are realized using a single-phase, two leg voltage source inverter (VSI). For the control of series APF, a simple control strategy based on Unit Vector Template (UVT) technique, is utilized, while six different control strategies are proposed for the control of shunt APF. In each proposed control strategy the control is made over the fundamental current and fundamental voltage instead of the fast changing APFs current and voltage, thereby reducing the computational delay. A dynamic model of the UPQC is developed in the MATLAB/SIMULINK enviournment and the simulation results demonstrating the power quality improvement in the system are presented for distorted supply and a combination of linear and non-linear load. A comparison, in terms of total harmonic distortion (THD), in source current and load voltage is also made for different control algorithms.
