Abstract
The purpose of the article is an analyze of the diplomatic activity in Ukrainian People's Republic for recognition of the autocephaly of the Ukrainian church in 1919–1920. Scientific novelty. The policy of Ukrainian People's Republic and the Ukrainian state in relation to the church is revealed. The foreign policy activity of Ukrainian People's Republic concerning the recognition of the autocephaly of Ukrainian church is analyzed. The peculiarities of work of the Ukrainian ambassador in Turkey O. Lototsky and his talks with the Patriarchate of Constantinople regarding provision of autocephaly to the Ukrainian church are highlighted. Conclusions. The movement for the autocephaly of the Ukrainian church began in early 1917 as a public initiative, and in the end of 1917 was organized in the form with the creation of the All-Ukrainian Orthodox Church Council. The Ukrainian Central Rada and Hetman P. Skoropadsky did not make a clear position regarding the autocephaly of the Ukrainian church, declaring non-interference in church affairs, and did not conduct the relevant activity on the foreign policy arena. Instead, the Directory of the UPR pursued the most distinct stance towards the church and its independence, by adopting in the 1919 law on autocephaly of the Ukrainian church. In pursuance of the provisions of this law, the activities of Ukrainian diplomats abroad were aimed at recognizing the Ukrainian church in the host country. Most consistently, this position was manifested in the posting by Ambassador of Ukraine in Turkey, former Minister of Religious Affairs O. Lototsky with the request of the Ukrainian government to the Patriarchate of Constantinople to provide autocephaly to the Ukrainian Church. Among other foreign policy steps of Ukrainian authorities, it should be noted that the initiative of appealing Ukrainians from different countries of the world to the Patriarchate of Constantinople with a request to support and bless the Autocephalous Orthodox Ukrainian Church and appoint a representative in Ukraine that would de facto testify to the recognition of the Ukrainian Church. However, at the diplomatic level, attempts by the Directorate of the UNR to achieve recognition of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church have not succeeded.
