DISEASE, ILLNESS, SICKNESS Nuns. Religious Congregations In Health Service In the People’s Republic of Poland: Based on Example of Western Pomerania

Journal Title: Miscellanea Anthropologica et Sociologica - Year 2013, Vol 14, Issue 2

Abstract

The role of nuns in health care during the postwar period should be considered through the prism of their service to the Roman Catholic Church. The main reason for this claim is that they were part of the Church and were subordinate to it. It has been the Christian principles, and which are included in the statutes of religious congregations, that have determined the behavior of nuns-nurses. Their presence in the country when it was broken by war was desirable – especially in newly incorporated areas – as there was a lack of medical sta and the National Health Service was not able to meet the needs of the population. Tending patients in hospitals and health centers, as well as visiting the sick in their homes was a relief to doctors and invaluable for people in need. Although not all of the nuns possessed professional nursing qualifications, most of them had a good reputation. Dedication, patience and selflessness were their most esteemed traits.
