Abstract

The article describes selected aspects of the physiology and pathophysiology of two major blood gases: oxygen and carbon dioxide. The effects of the mentioned gases in the context of respiratory drive, some pitfalls of pulse oximetry (hemoglobin dissociation curve), as well as selected issues of oxygen therapy and ventilation are discussed.
