Does Hypothyroidism Promote Gallstone Formation?
Journal Title: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 11
Abstract
Introduction: Gallstone disease is a very common disorder affecting humans, particularly fertile females. Although there are numerous established risk factors in the development of gallstones, hypothyroidism is a commonly associated entity seen in clinical practice, not well established in literature. Purpose: The aim of this study is to find out the association of hypothyroidism with gallstone formation. Methods: A total of 124 patients with gallstone disease were included in the study. Thyroid function tests were performed in all of them. The incidence of hypothyroidism was found out and compared with the established incidence of hypothyroidism in adult population. The results were compared statistically. Results: Of the 124 patients included in the study, 28.5% were found to be hypothyroid. Based on a national study, the prevalence of hypothyroidism in general population was 10.95%. Statistically, hypothyroidism was found to be significantly higher in patients with gallstone disease. Conclusion: The incidence of hypothyroidism is significantly higher in patients with gallstone disease. Hence, thyroid testing is recommended in these patients as it has anesthetic implications.
