Abstract

The Secret Service documents as an empirical evidence for a sociologist This article aims to show the fi les of the Secret Service (SB) as empirical evidence that inspires yet demands the historically oriented sociologist. The article consists of two parts. The first part of the article addresses the ways in which some classic sociological topics such as social movements, social control, role taking, biographical and occupational studies, benefi t the sociologist. The second part analyzes some basic methodological problems. Lack of “historical imagination”, reliability, potential forgery, biases, validity, ambiguity on the recording circumstances and archival absence are discussed here. In the conclusion, the paper offers some meta-sociological hypotheses addressing the question why SB documents heretofore have lain dormant.
