Abstract
A Tree in the Polish Folk Fairy Tale: About the Perspectives of Meaning Construction in the Traditional-Type Culture. The Polish folk fairy tale of various genres is applied as the material basis of the paper. Analysing the meanings ascribed to a tree in these texts, the author distinguishes four perspectives which create the picture of a tree in folk fairy tales: the religious perspective (divine trees and devil‟s trees); the faith-based perspective (demonic trees); the mythical perspective (magic trees and axis mundi), and the trickster‟s perspective (a tree in the struggle for survival). No utilitarian, ecological, aesthetical and ritual perspectives were found. However, the vitality of the fairytale motif of a tree in the contemporary culture proves that the most archaic senses connected with the semantics of trees are still functioning in the living circulation of a cultural content and shaping the con-temporary cultural identity of the Poles.
