Dyplomacja - propaganda - pamięć historyczna. O realnych i o symbolicznych losach kilku warszawskich „miejsc pamięci” w czasach nowożytnych

Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2014, Vol 13, Issue 50

Abstract

the article is related to the recently fashionable term “places of memories” (lieux de mémoire), in humanistic studies, which has inspired numerous studies dedicated to their concrete location, as well as the historical associations they bring to mind, representing important elements of social identity. in his deliberations, the author takes advantage of selected episodes – as well as actual building and their accompanying symbolism – in Polish-russian relations from the 16th century up to the 20th century. thus, the relations in question are of a difficult and conflicting nature, but also relations in which the “politics of memory” – or even, as some say, “the struggle for memory” – is quite apparent. the first subject that is discussed is the fate of the so-called “Muscovite Chapel” – a secretive building in the region of the present day staszic Palace in Warsaw, supposedly housing the remains of tsar Vasili shuyski and the closest members of his family since 1620. next, the author relates the history of the beautiful Łazienki Park in Warsaw, adorned by the ‘Palace on the Water’ and many other elegant buildings – a complex singularly identified with the reign of the last king of Poland, stanisław august Poniatowski. at the same time it is noted that the 19th century, the period of partitions and the reign of the romanovs, is also a time of impressive russian investment, essentially enriching and influencing the entire shape of the park. the context for deliberation over the fate of the Chapel and the Łazienki Park serves a reminder of the historical dilemmas and decisions which the people responsible for the urban public space of Warsaw had to undertake in the most troublesome spots, especially in relation to three very prominent buildings: the university of Warsaw Library (erected at the close of the 19th century for the then russian university), the russian Orthodox Cathedral of st. alexander nevsky and the Palace of Culture and science (a monumental social-realist construction). in his conclusion, the author underlines the significance of multi-faceted analysis of the motives behind particular architectural decisions and also encourages monitoring the fate of controversial constructions, as not only do they symbolize transformations appearing in surrounding society, but they also illustrate the mechanism of familiarization with certain buildings, the entrenchment of their presence in the city landscape and finally, their acceptance by society.
