Działalność dydaktyczna i naukowo-badawcza Wydziału i Instytutu Nauk Humanistycznych w latach 1990-2008

Journal Title: Zeszyty Naukowe Akademii Sztuki Wojennej - Year 2009, Vol 2009, Issue 3

Abstract

The process of qualitative transformations that was started in the armed forces at the beginning of the 90s included all areas of their activities. These undertakings were particularly swiftly reflected in military education. Taking into consideration current experiences and viewpoints, the main task of military schools was to develop a new national concept of education and training adjusted to the changing reality and armed forces’ needs and prospective intentions and tendencies of the state to function in NATO structures. In 1990-2008, the Department and Institute of the Humanities were important organisational units of the university. Their mission was to provide education for officers - educators for the armed forces’ needs, prepare humanistic staff for higher military education and carry out research in the field of humanities. The Department of Humanities functioned in 1990-1994. It consisted of the command, six chairs and the department of training with a team of technicians, engineers and maintenance staff. Then, due to the decision to stop educating officers - educators, the department was transformed into an institute with a chair and branch structure. A few hundred of officers were educated on Master’s and Doctoral studies on two courses: Pedagogy and History. The Institute’s employees initially rendered didactic services for other university units. Then they continued the first and second cycle (Bachelor’s and Master’s) of History studies taken over from the Military Institute of History. In 2004, the Institute launched the first cycle (Bachelor ’s) course on the European studies that are still being conducted. In spite of some organisational - personal turbulence, both the Department and the Institute conducted scientific and research activity. Its aim was initially to define the military humanities’ identity in the Polish humanities’ system and to develop new theory of education in the armed forces and consequently officers’ humanistic education. The research clearly focused on new, not ideologically biased, interpretation of Poland’s 20th century history phenomena, theory and history of education, security philosophy and current social and political problems. On that basis, handbooks for students were devised adjusting research results to didactic needs and thus enriching didactic base. The analysis of research tasks and subjects shows that the research areas covered the main didactic tasks and needs and concerned military pedagogy, defence education for the society, security philosophy, history of the art of war, psychology of commanding, military sociology and military profession ethics. Publications played an essential role in disseminating the research output, development, promoting research achievements of military studies’ exponents and improving commentary and editorial effectiveness. To sum up, the eighteen years of Humanistic unit functioning as an independent organisational unit marks on the one hand the time of efficient didactic, scientific and research activity, on the other, a systematic decrease in personnel - and in this way the potential of the Department and Institute.
