Abstract
When communists seized power in Poland, they had to face underground armed groups hostile to them in the Rzeszów region. These were Ukrainian nationalists who formed the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, Polish groups formed on the ruins of the Home Army and independent national groups. To solve the problem with the Ukrainian underground, the authorities decided that the Ukrainians should be deported to the Soviet Union and thus the Ukrainian Insurgent army would be deprived of the support of the civilian population. The deportation of the Ukrainians lasted in the years 1944-1946 and was stopped by the Soviet authorities. When the communist security apparatus failed to cope with the underground armed groups, the People’s Army of Poland was asked for help, which resulted in forming the ‘Rzeszów’ Operation Group whose aim was to fight against the enemies of the authorities. Another task the ‘Rzeszów’Operation Group was later assigned was organizing a referendum in the province of Rzeszów and forming military propaganda groups. In the summer of 1946, the guerrilla group commanded by Maj. Hieronim Dekutowski ‘Zapora’decided to launch a raid: several armed actions against the authorities in the region of Kolbuszowa, after which he returned to the region of Lublin. The last action the communist army was involved in was the so-called ‘Operation Vistula’and for this purpose ‘Vistula’ Operation Group was formed. The aim of this action was to deport, in the summer of 1847, the Ukrainians who lived in the south-east of Poland to so-called ‘Recovered Territories’.To fill the void in the deserted borderlands, the authorities decided to deport the Poles from the province of Rzeszów to post-Ukrainian areas. As long as security forces were strong enough to manage the opposition, they did not need to look to the army.
