Abstract

The history of Bohemian book culture constitutes an extremely peculiar and complex process. Dynamic and harmonious development of Bohemian language and literature during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance suddenly broke down in the subsequent periods. The defeat of the Bohemian Protestants at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 after which re- Catholicisation and Germanisation took place was a turning point. As a result of this defeat Bohemian language and the Bohemian book were relegated to the margin of social life. However, at the turn of the 19th century a number of processes which are referred to as “the Czech National Revival” occurred. Owing to this revival during a few decades the disadvantageous trends were stopped and reversed, and Bohemian language regained its rightful dominant position in the country. Literature, theatre, education and libraries subsequently thrived, which exerted an infl uence upon the book market. At the same time the latter stimulated the development of readership. Its further development took place after independence was regained in 1918 and when Czechoslovakia was formed. After the country was crushed by the Germans during the occupation, the book and readership constituted an area of relative freedom of the Czech people who saw in those things a means to survive and to maintain their identity. This attitude also prevailed after 1945, despite ideologisation and bitter censorship practices. After the fall of communism, similarly as in the case of other countries of the region, an independent book market was reconstructed. Moreover, new problems which were theretofore unknown appeared. However, the book is still important for the Czech people. Readership and the book market resist disadvantageous tendencies to a much greater extent than it is the case of other countries.
