ECONOMICAL AND OPERATIONAL EVALUATION OF FAST FERRIES Based on the Baltic shipping experiences
Journal Title: Biuletyn Instytutu Morskiego - Year 1997, Vol 24, Issue 2
Abstract
The growing competition between different modes of transport has shifted some categories of passengers and cargo to the sea - shipping operated by the high - speed multihullferries with a service speed reaching 40 knots (75 km/hr). The main advantage of a fast ferry is that the capital cost of the vessel is much lower in comparing with the conventional less speedy alternative. The operation costs of the fast ferries compared with the conventional day and overnight ferri es, are presenting lower level of costs due to the high utilisation rate, achieved per passenger trip and higher per passenger/car space. The cost structure of the fast ferries indicates that as competitor to the conventional ones, can match the demand of the present shipping market. The Baltic Sea market is one of the most technologically advanced market in the last 20 years and the Finish shipyards have at present a strong position in building the large ferries offering high standard of services. The conventional Baltic Sea ferry after being replaced by the new technology have been sold for operation in the Mediterranean Sea, either in the English Channel. At present some Australian shipbuilders are producing cheap and fast aluminium catamarans which are successfully operated at the Mediterranean and Baltic Sea including Polish Baltic Shipping Company.
