Economics of Urban Crime: The Ile-Ife, Nigeria Experience

Abstract
Having obtained information through systematic sampling of 334 households, the study examined cost associated with crime among the residents of Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Findings revealed that the most dreaded crime event among the residents was loss of one’s life or killing of household member (18.86%) while the least was properties being carted away (15.10%). As a result of this emotional cost,53% of the residents spend N1000 to N25,000 on security devices against crime on monthly basis while 18% spent above N50000 to N100000 on same. This amount is being spent on installation, servicing and maintenance of security light(15.29%), construction and maintenance of burglary proofs (12.61%) and erection and maintenance of fences (11.99%). Residents also spent significantly on sophisticated security devices such as security camera (3.11%) and surveillances/CCTV (2.49%) while 8.15% was accrued to payment of periodic insurance scheme premium. The study concluded that crime is costly social problem in that it increases cost of living and fear as revealed on how much people are paying for the misdemeanor of the lawbreakers in our urban centers.
