Abstract

This study aimed to make an identification of the ecosystems from the west margin of the navigation channel of the port of Rio Grande (RS) in the estuary of the Patos Lagoon and an assessment of the human occupation in the region, using tools such as database and geographic information system (GIS). The final product regarding the GIS is a series of maps showing the spatial distribution of ecosystems and the evolution of human activities in the port area. Ports are considered as factors of environmental risk in the coastal zone providing impacting activities potentially related to their operational characteristics of charge loading and unloading activities, the expansion or establishment of new sites, and the impact of chemical industrial activities concentrated in its surroundings. In this context, there is the need for information about ecosystems and their use and alterations as a basis for environmental management of these activities. Ecosystems identified in the area were marshes, dunes, fields, forests and mud flats. In estimating the degree of suppression, the dunes and freshwater ecosystems had their areas of occupation reduced over time. The area occupied by forestry showed an increase due to vegetative increase of the ecosystem. The levels of human occupation in the city followed the peak of economic development in Rio Grande, which showed a significant increase between the 40’s and 70’s, provided by the creation of the local Superporto and the Industrial District.
