EDUCATION OF GIFTED STUDENTS IN TURKEY

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to present current situation of gifted students in Turkey. Gifted chil-dren who are endowed with certain abilities from birth need professionally prepared educational settings and curricula implemented by experts, which can only be realized through special edu-cation. Nearly all of the countries which rely on modern technology recognize the importance of making suitable provision for the education of individuals with superior abilities. These countries will undoubtedly benefi t in many areas of development.At the beginning of the article authors defi ne the term “gifted students” and then give their main characteristics. The major institutions that conduct classes for talented children and talented young people in Turkey are listed. Science and art centers play a special role in the education of students from kindergarten until going to university. In the paper aims and principles of centers are described in de-tail. Attention is focused on the construction principle of educational programs and the register of on-going programs. In the fi nal part the brief overview of the Turkish research on gifted students is given.
