Effect of Crude Ethanolic Extract of Capsicum Frutescens Fruit on Cisplatin-Induced Renal Insufficiency in Rats

Journal Title: Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology Advances - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

The effect of crude ethanolic extract of Capsicum frutescens fruit (CFE) on some serum parameters of rats with cisplatin-induced renal insufficiency was investigated. Fifteen wister rats (115-180g) were divided into five (5) groups of three (3) animals each. All animal groups were administered either Normal saline alone, cisplatin (5mg/kg bw) alone or Capsicum flavescens fruit ethanolic extract (CFE) before, simultaneously with, or after cisplatin administration. The assay results show a significant elevation in the levels of serum creatinine and urea, and a reduction in serum total protein level before the administration of CFE. Administrations of CFE lead to reduction in the levels of serum creatinine and urea, and increase in total protein level. These changes were significant when CFE was administered before or after induction of renal insufficiency and not simultaneously with the nephrotoxic agent, cisplatin. These results indicate that CFE may be effective in ameliorating cisplatin- induced renal insufficiency. This effect may be mediated through its antioxidative properties.
