Relationship and Distribution of ABO, Rh Blood Groups and Hemoglobin Concentration among the Adolescents
Journal Title: Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology Advances - Year 2015, Vol 5, Issue 9
Abstract
Anemia is a global problem and at its worst in developing countries. It is suggested that the oral supplementation of iron is not the best way to correct anemia (especially which are not due to iron deficiency) due to its adverse effect on body functions. Under this situation, it is far better to take the preventive measure to combat anemia by taking iron or vitamin rich diet, especially to those who are more prone to anemia; though the type of such population is not known to us. The present study was to find out whether there is any relation of blood group in the occurrence of anemia to recommend the appropriate preventive measure to eradicate anemia. The observational cross sectional study was done in 300 undergraduate students by measuring their hemoglobin concentration, ABO and Rh blood groups. The frequency distribution of blood groups A, B, AB and O was found to be 20%, 39.7%, 10.7% and 29.7% respectively. The percentage of Rh+ive and Rh-ve among study students was found to be 90.3% and 9.7% respectively. Anemia was present in 35% of the study students. It was more prevalent in the girls (44.8%) than the boys (17.6%) and was statistically significant (p=0. 000). Further anemia was relatively more prone in the individuals having blood group B (41.2%), A (33.3%), and AB (40.6%) while blood group O (25.8%) was comparatively resistant to anemia but it was not statistically significant. Anemia is relatively prone in individuals with Blood group A, B and AB while Blood group O is comparatively resistant to anemia.
