Effect of fresh frozen plasma transfusion on prothrombin time/international normalized ratio in tertiary care hospital

Journal Title: Pathology And Laboratory Medicine - Year 2018, Vol 9, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) is one of the components of blood which is acellular, frequently transfused to patients with an elevated prothromb in time (PT),measures the activity of common coagulation pathway (involving factors X, V, II and I) and extrinsic coagulation pathway (involving factor VII). In a routine clinical practice, PT is well understood by International Normalized Ratio. Material and method: This is a prospective cohort study conducted to compare the effect of FFP transfusion in mild to very high coagulation abnormalitity over a period of 2 years from August 2016 to July 2018. In this study total 104 requests for FFP transfusions with increased PT/ INR values were received. Result and conclusion: • There is significant reduction in INR after transfusion of fresh frozen plasma in patients who had higher values of pretransfusion INR (>2.0). • It also helps us in setting up policies to improve the utility and reduce the wastage of this important blood product.
