Effect of hydric stress induced by PEG 6000 on water content of Musa spp. ‘Grande naine’ (AAA) and ‘Pelipita’ (ABB) in vitro plants
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2015, Vol 15, Issue 4
Abstract
Bananas and bananas are grown in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, by hence they are adapted to good humidity conditions. The productivity of these crops is affected by abiotic factors such as drought, which has increased in recent years due to the effects of climate change. In vitro selection of tolerant genotypes offers advantages over field selection as it saves time, resources and permit to work with larger plant volumes. The aim of this work was to determine the effect of in vitro water stress induced with polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000) on water content (WC) of Musa spp. ‘Grande naine’ (AAA) and ‘Pelipita’ (ABB) cultivars. In ‘Pelipita’ cultivar WC was not affected by PEG 6000 effect, but in ‘Grande naine’ this trait was significantly reduced in those plants under stress. Both, ‘Pelipita’ and ‘Grande naine’ cultivars differentially respond to water stress induced in vitro by PEG 6000 and could be used as reference in plants evaluation obtained by plant breeding for drought tolerance.

Oxidative burst in plant-pathogen interaction
The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via consumption of oxygen in a so-called oxidative burst is a hallmark of successful recognition of infection and activation of plant defenses. ROS are not only toxic by-...

Effect of synthetic brassinosteroids on the induction of rice callus
The present work shows the effect of the synthetic brassinosteroids BIOBRAS 6, ME and BIOBRAS 16 in the induction of callus of rice (Oryza sativa L) of the commercial varieties J-104 and Pokkali. Mature seeds were used...
Novel explant for somatic embryogenesis in Sorghum bicolor (L.) Mohen
This work was carried out with the objective to form somatic embryos of sorghum, cv. ‘CIAP 132R-05’ starting from callus obtained from sections of in vitro shoots. For the formation of callus, different concentrations o...
Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated genetic transformation of embryogenic cell suspensions of the banana hybrid cultivar FHIA 21 (AAAB)
The genetic improvement of plantain and banana is of great importance for its level of consumption on a world-wide scale. Genetic transformation constitutes one alternative for genetic improvement and has complemented tr...
