Effect of Induction Surface Hardening on Fatigue Limit of Austempered Ductile Irons

Abstract

In this study, the effect of induction surface hardening on the fatigue limit of austempered ductile iron was investigated. For this purpose, samples of grade GGG70 ductile iron were austenitized at 900°C for 90 minutes and then austempered in a salt bath at 375 ° C for 120 minutes. Then, surface hardening was performed to the fatigue samples in cast and austempered conditions with high frequency induction. The fatigue strengths of the as cast, austempered , as cast+induction surface hardened and austempered+induction surface hardened specimens were determined by the rotational bending fatigue method. Experimental results show that austempered + surface induction hardened specimens exhibited the best fatigue strength results among the tested samples.
