EFFECT OF THE SUBSTRATE HARDNESS AND ELASTICITY ON THE MICRO-IMPACT FATIGUE WEAR OF THE COATING

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2014, Vol 257, Issue 5

Abstract

Micro-impact strength tests of tribological coatings were performed in order to obtain knowledge about cracking and decohesion of coatings under cyclically repeated impact loads, depending on the hardness and elasticity of the substrate. The destruction of the coating is caused by the accumulation of the effects over long periods of time, which are measured by the number of impacts at a set load and kinetic energy. TiN coatings with a thickness of 0.5 μm deposited on austenitic and ferritic steel were investigated. The hardness and elastic modulus of both substrates and coating-substrate systems were determined using a Micro-Combi-Tester from CSM Instruments. Micro-impact fatigue tests were carried out on an impact tester designed and built in the Laboratory of Tribology and Surface Engineering AGH University of Science and Technology. It was found that the elasticity and the hardness of the substrate significantly influence the impact fatigue process.
