THE WEAR MECHANISM IN THE ASPECT OF CHANGES IN THE SURFACE LAYER OF METALLURGICAL WORKING ROLLERS AFTER EXPLOITATION
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2015, Vol 261, Issue 3
Abstract
The work characterizes the wear mechanisms of steelwork working rollers in hot rolling mills of steel products and semi-products. It presents the results of the examinations of the surface layer of samples obtained from seventeen rollers after they had been removed from operation. Three rollers were made of hypoeutectoid steel, one of eutectoid steel, one of hypereutectoid steel, two of hypereutectoid cast steels, four of hypoeutectoid cast steels, and six were made of mottle cast iron with spheroidal graphite. The analysis of the surface layers in the working areas made it possible to point to the main wear mechanisms of these tools. The hypoeutectoid steel rollers were characterize by the formation of “stickings” of the rolled material, the formation of the “white layer” and an intense work hardening. The eutectoid steel roller was characterizes by the formation of “stickings” of the rolled material, but especially by the formation of the white layer. In the roller made of hypereutectoid steel, the phenomena of “stickings” of the rolled material as well as the formation of the white layer are significantly limited. The rollers made of hypereutectoid cast steels exhibit the white layer phenomenon only incidentally, while showing visible fragmentation (decohesion) of the surface layer as a result of tribological interactions. The hypoeutectoid cast steel rollers were characterize mainly by the material’s decohesion along the precipitates of the ledeburitic cementite and secondary cementite precipitated in the Widmannstätten system. The edges of such cracks work like blades, which cut the rolled material. The rollers made of mottle cast iron are prone to the development of cracks along the eutectic carbide precipitates, and the lack of dispersive secondary carbide precipitates favours the formation of the white layer.
