Effect of work on general wellbeing of paramedics

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2016, Vol 22, Issue 1

Abstract

In the work of paramedics there are many factors which may result in the deterioration of wellbeing. These may be patients and their aggressive behaviour, and the risk of infection with viruses, bacteria, fungi, as well as the necessity for the paramedics to change mental alertness resulting from the organization of work, including shift work. There may also occur complaints on the part of the musculoskeletal system as a result of carrying patients, traffic accidents, and many others. The objective of the study is determination of the factors which exert an effect on the wellbeing of paramedics at work. Material and methods. The study was conducted in 2014 at ambulance stations in the Lublin Region, in a group of 120 paramedics, using a questionnaire for the measurement of the symptoms of poor physical wellbeing. Results. The most frequent complaints experienced by the respondents within the last 30 days, which were not the cause of reporting for a medical consultation, were: fatigue (59.2%) and back pain (57.5%). Knowledge and application of the regulations concerning manual transport work activities, and the principles of preventing musculoskeletal disorders, decreased physical complaints in the group examined. The majority of respondents who had been employed in more than one workplace complained of fatigue within the last 30 days. Females, more frequently than males, experienced physical complaints related with the work performed. Conclusions. The wellbeing of paramedics is affected by age, gender, number of duties, number of workplaces, as well as knowledge of principles concerning manual transport. Wellbeing of the group in the study did not depend on education possessed.Key words: musculoskeletal pain, emergency medical services, muscle fatigue, work
