EFFECTIVENESS OF DYE RB5 ADSORPTION ONTO CHITIN AND CHITOSAN UNDER STATIC AND DYNAMIC CONDITIONS
Journal Title: Progress on Chemistry and Application of Chitin and its Derivatives - Year 2009, Vol 0, Issue
Abstract
Analyses were carried out for adsorption of a reactive dye RB5 onto chitin and chitosan under static and dynamic conditions in an air-lift reactor. Assays were conducted for the effect of the type of sorbent and its content in the reactor on adsorption capacity of sorbents examined. The sorbent’s concentration under static conditions and in the reactor reached 5 mg d.m./dm3. In all experimental series, the flow rate of dye inflowing to the reactor was constant and reached 1V/h (where V-reactor’s volume) and concentration of dye discharged to the reactor accounted for 100 mg/dm3. The solution’s reaction reached pH = 3.0 for chitin and pH = 5.0 Investigations demonstrated that running the adsorption process in an air-lift reactor under dynamic conditions had a beneficial effect on the amount of dye adsorbed both onto chitin and chitosan. In the case of chitin, the application of the air-lift reactor affect an increase in the quantity of dye adsorbed by 18%, whereas the quantity of dye adsorbed onto chitosan under dynamic conditions increased by 8%.

Studies on the Dyeing of Chitin and Chitosan with pre-metallised Dyes at Neutral pH
Both 1:1 pre-metallised acid dyes and pre-coppered direct dyes, but not 1:2 pre-metallised acid dyes, have been shown to readily dye chitin and chitosan from neutral dyebaths. With the 1:1 pre-metallised acid dyes the ad...
SURFACE PROPERTIES OF CHITOSAN COMPOSITES WITH POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL) AND HYDROXYAPATITE
Surface properties of composites containing chitosan (Ch), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with hydroxyapatite (HAP) were investigated by contact angle measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Thin films of Ch/HAP and C...
HIGHLY SENSITIVE CHITOSAN-BASED OPTICAL FLUORESCENT SENSOR FOR GASEOUS METHYLAMINE DETECTION
An optical fluorescent sensor based on a chitosan thin film co-doped with Eu3+ and a bromothymol blue pH indicator has been developed. Near-UV to visible (350–400 nm) excitation of the europium (III) chelate complexes wi...
THE INFLUENCE OF SELECTED POLYMERS ON THE RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF HYDROGELS WITH CHITOSAN APPLIED ON THE SKIN
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of methylcellulose and carboxymethylcellulose on the rheological properties of hydrogels applied to skin on chitosan in the presence of the additives propylene glycol and g...
ChITOSAN DICHLOROACETIC ACID SALTS
The salts of dichloroacetic acid were obtained from chitosans of different deacetylation degrees (69÷97%) and viscosity-average molecular weights (61÷327 kDa). The mole ratio of dichloroacetic acid to amine groups was 1....
