Abstract
Moringaoleiferaleafisanutritiousvegetablewithvarietyoftherapeuticuses.ThisstudywascarriedouttodeterminetheeffectivenessofethanolleafextractofMoringaoleiferainthetreatmentofanaemiainducedinalbinoratsbyadministrationofAlCl3.PhytochemicalscreeningwascarriedoutonM.oleiferaleafextractaccordingtostandardprocedure.Fiftyalbinoratsweredividedintosixgroupseachconsistingofeightanimals.Thecontrolgroup(group1)receivednormalsalinesolutiononly,group2wasthenegativecontrolgroupandwasadministered0.5mg/kgofAlCl3.Group3,4and5werethetreatmentgroupsandinadditionto0.5mg/kgbodyweightofAlCl3receivedM.oleiferaextractof500,1000and2000mg/kgrespectively.Group6wastheextractcontrolgroupandweregiven500mg/kgbodyweightofM.oleifera.ThephytochemicalanalysisoftheethanolextractofM.oleiferaleafshowedthepresenceoftannins,saponins,glycosides,terpenoids,steroids,flavonoidsandalkaloids.TheresultshowedthatAlCl3ledtosignificantdecrease(P<0.05)inredbloodcellcount(RBC),hemoglobin(Hb),andhematocrit(PCV)comparedwiththepositivecontrolrats(notadministeredAlCl3).TheresultalsoshowedthatadministrationofM.oleiferaleafextractatdosesof500,1000and2000mg/kgcausedsignificantdosedependentdecreaseinserumASTandALTactivitiescomparedwiththenegativecontrolgroup(administeredAlCl3withouttreatment).However,nosignificantdifference(P>0.05)wasobservedinserumASTandALTactivitiesoftheextractcontrolgroup(administered500mg/kgofextractwithoutAlCl3)comparedwiththenormalcontrolgroupwhileadministrationofM.oleiferaleafextractatdosesof500,1000and2000mg/kgcausedsignificantdosedependentincreaseinserumtotalproteins.Nosignificantdifference(P>0.05)wasobservedinserumtotalproteinsofanaemicratadministeredM.oleiferaextractatdosesof500mg/kgcomparedwiththenegativecontrolgroup(AlCl3).Thenormalcontrolgroupandtheextractgrouphadprogressiveincreaseinbodyweightthroughoutthestudyperiod(28days)whilethegroupofratsgivenAlCl3withM.oleiferaextractatdosesof500,1000and2000mg/kgshowedaninitialdecreaseinbodyweightfor2weeksoftreatmentsandasignificantimprovementinbodyweightafterthethirdweek.ThisstudyhasshownthatM.oleiferaleafextracthasthepotentialtoamelioratethedamagedbloodparametersinAlCl3inducedanaemiainrats.
