Effects of 8-week IAAF Kids’ Athletics Plays on 1000M Running Performance of 11-12 Aged Group Children

Journal Title: Beden Eğitimi ve Spor Araştırmaları Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 9, Issue 1

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of 8-week IAAF Kids’ Athletics plays including in 8 min endurance running, formula 1, and sprint/hurdle/slalom relay running on 1000 m running performance of 11-12 aged group children. Thirty-six male students (age: 11.50±0.52 year) volunteered in the study. They were divided to 3 groups [Group 1 (n=12): 8 min Endurance Running Group, Group 2 (n=12): Formula 1 Group, and Group 3 (n=12): Sprint/Hurdle/Slalom Relay Running Group]. Each group trained with 8 weeks, 3 times a week, 45 min a day (warm-up phase: 20 min, main (playing) phase: 20 min, cool-down phase: 5 min). Warm-up procedure was 10 min jogging, 10 min stretching, and 4x50 m acceleration running before pre- and post-tests for the groups. Pre- and post-training 1000m running performance were tested. Pre- and post-training test comparisons within the groups were analysed statistically with Wilcoxon paired two- sampled test. The probability level for statistical significance was set to p ≤ 0.05. There were significant statistical pre- and post-training test differences for each group [Group 1: Z= -3.061, p ≤ 0.01, from 285.25s to 255.50s), (Group 2: Z= -3.061, p ≤ 0.01, from 308.0s to 289.1s), and (Group 3: Z= -2.551, p ≤ 0.05, from 301.1s to 291.0s)]. In conclusion, aerobic endurance in children can be developed with some plays instead of training methods such as fartlek, interval. These plays can be effective training methods for preventing children from the effects of continuous running or same overloading that children find boring.
