Effects of Heavy Metals Bioaccumulation and Histopathology in Gill, Liver and Kidney of Fish, Alepes vari (Cuvier, 1833) Collected from Uppanar Estuary
Journal Title: International Journal of Zoological Investigations - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Pollution of aquatic environment is a serious and growing problem, which is usually caused by domestic, agricultural, commercial and industrial activities of man. However, heavy metals are considered the most hazardous of all environmental pollutants due to their bioaccumulation and toxicity tendency. Heavy metals may precipitate, get absorbed on sediment particles, remain soluble or suspended in water and may be taken up by aquatic fauna upon their entry into water bodies. In this study cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) contents in water and sediments of the Uppanar estuary and in the tissues (gill, liver and kidney) of the fish Alepes vari were analysed. Also, effects of the heavy metals bioaccumulation on histological alterations in gill, liver and kidney of the fish Alepes vari collected from Uppanar estuary were evaluated. The results revealed that concentrations of the metals differ significantly (p<0.05) between the estuary water, sediment, gill, liver and kidney of the collected fish. Gill, liver and kidney bioaccumulations of the metals were in the order of Hg>Pb>Cd. However, tissue alterations were noticed in the gills, liver and kidney of Alepes vari collected from Uppanar estuary.
