Effects of MgSO4/MgCl2 on FGD Gypsum Solubility and Whisker Crystallization

Abstract

Taking the purified flue-gas desulfurization ( FGD) gypsum as raw material, the calcium sulfate whiskers were prepared by hydrothermal method.The effects of additive MgSO4 or MgCl2 on the microstructure, aspect ratio of whiskers and the solubility of treated FGD gypsum were investigated. The ionization and hydrolysis characteristics of MgSO4 or MgCl2 in the reaction solution and their mechanism were discussed. The results show that the crystallization of calcium sulfate whiskers can be improved and their aspect ratio can also be increased via the addition of MgSO4 or MgCl2, but the phase of whiskers remain unchanged. When the dosage ( mass fraction) of MgSO4 is 2.0% and the dosage ( mass fraction) of MgCl2 is 1.5%, the aspect ratio of the prepared whiskers is 80 and 110, respectively.The solubility of FGD gypsum is decreased by adding MgSO4 into solution, because the common ion effect plays a dominant role. While the solubility of FGD gypsum is increased by MgCl2. The effect of MgCl2 on whisker crystallization is better than that of MgSO4 because the neutral ion pairs of MgSO4 ( 0) play a dominant role on the relative stability of the whole ions concentration.
