Effects of Organic Food Consumption Behaviors on Orthorexia Nervosa Tendency

Abstract

Organic food is food that is considered healthy, defined as “natural”, “local”, “fresh” and “pure”. Orthorexia nervosa is explained as a pathological obsession with consuming biologically pure and healthy foods. It is a situation where the anxiety about proper nutrition with the effort to maintain and improve the healthy state is seen more than normal. This study was conducted between December 2020 - January 2021 to investigate the effects of organic food consumption behaviors on orthorexia nervosa tendency. It was conducted using a questionnaire method with 502 people who bought organic food at least once. Organic food consumption behaviors; It consists of norms, selfidentity, health consciousness, benefits of consuming organic food, positive moral attitudes and information seeking dimensions. The effects of these dimensions on concerns about healthy eating, food choice and eating attitudes and behaviors and the value of food choice, which are dimensions of orthorexia neurosis tendency were tested separately. Model testing was done with partial least squares (PLS-SEM) management. SmartPLS 3.3.3 program was used for hypothesis tests. According to the results of the research, organic food consumption behaviors on the dimension of the concerns about healthy eating obsession; it has been determined that health awareness, self-identity, benefits of consuming organic food and positive moral approach dimensions have negative effects. It has been observed that the dimensions of health awareness and information seeking have adverse effects on the dimensions of food selection and eating attitudes and behaviors. On the other hand, it has been observed that self-identity and benefits of consuming organic food have opposite effects on the nutritional selection value dimension.
