Emotional factors in motor control in humans

Abstract

In 1947 outstanding Russian scientist N.A. Bernstein (1896–1966) described the five-level theory of movements’ construction in humans. He emphasized mainly neurophysiological and anatomical factors, and to lesser extent also a psychological one. Unfortunately, his most instructive work about this theory has been published in Russian only in 1991 and in English in 1996. Bernstein’s theory was in fact a system approach to motor control in humans, though full presentation of system’s theory was made by L. von Bertalanffy only in 1968. Thus, it is justified to apply the basic rules of modern systems theory to the Bernstein’s system, taking into account also emotional factors. In general a system has a layered structure, in which, according to J. Morawski, main system rules are: rule of layers hierarchy, rule of layer autonomy and rule of scales conformity. In motor control in humans, the emotional factors act as selective amplifiers of incoming information (attention). Thus they organize the hierarchy of information to be processed intellectually at each level of movements’ construction. Then, after the response is already being created, the emotional factors selectively amplify it (prudence). Such an approach enables better definition of various emotional factors and their differentiation at each level of Bernstein’s system.
