EMPATHY AS A COMPONENT OF COMPETITIVENESS OF FUTURE PSYCHOLOGISTS

Abstract

Changes in the society require a new type of relationship between people, which is based on the ideas of humanism, and it’s necessary to treat every person taking into account his / her uniqueness and originality. Psychologist is a very responsible profession as it has a certain influence on the life of other people. In their work, psychologists investigate physical, emotional, social aspects of human behaviour, using scientific principles and theories, psychological methods and techniques. Though, in spite of numerous professional tools, which are available for a present-day psychologist, in our opinion, direct interaction between people (psychologist - client) seem to be essential and determinative in practical work. This is the close mutual contact that requires from the psychologist a number of personal qualities, alongside with some other components, which might enable him / her to become a competitive specialist. One of such qualities which we should form in the process of future psychologists’ professional training is the capacity for empathy. The role of empathy in personal development has been the subject of scientific investigations in psychology, pedagogy and other sciences which study the interaction “person -person”. It is connected with the fact that empathy produces a significant effect on a person in the whole, improves his / her motivation, productivity and working efficiency, helps to orient in social relationships and build personal ones. The essence of the concept «empathy», its structure and types have been analyzed in the work. In our opinion, a special attention is paid to an important moment which explains why the concept of «empathy» is not equal to the concept of “sympathy”. After all, while working with a client, a psychologist must clearly differentiate their own feelings and emotions from the feelings and emotions of some other person. It is also necessary to remember that somewhere inside a psychologist does not always share a client’s position, his / her moral or ethical views, herewith empathic attitude allows him / her to get into the emotional world of some other person and build professional interaction aimed at helping a client's request to be solved. Having studied and analyzed scientific, methodical literature, we came to the conclusion that professional empathy is a complex and multistructural formation. That is why it is necessary to develop a complex programme, taking into account all the components of the structure, for the formation of the future psychologists’ empathic capabilities. This is the very perspective of our further research.
