Environmental assessment of the surface water quality in the Sarata river basin for systems of drip irrigation

Abstract

The article presents the results of the research of the hydrochemical structure of surface waters of the Sarata River, which is a part of the Black Sea basin. The environmental assessment of the river water quality for the systems of drip irrigation for the period from 2006 to 2016 has been carried out. Agronomic, ecological and technical (technological) criteria and indicators are taken into account. According to the calculations, it was determined that the concentration of toxic ions in the water varied within the limits of 28.1 to 72.2 mекv/dm3, the main pollutants of the water were chlorine ions (72 to 80%) and sulfates (14 to 17%). The alkalinity from standard carbonates ( ) in water varied mainly in the range of 0.25 to 0.61 mекv/dm3. The magnitude of the inter-relations (in percentages) of the sum of alkali cations of sodium and potassium to the sum of all cations (mекv/dm3) by average annual rate of ingredients varied from 56 to 76 percent, which corresponds to the III class of water quality. High levels of salinity of the Sarata River water have been noted, which varied with average annual values within 3.1 to 7.2 g/dm3, and at maximum ‒ 3,6 to 10.3 g/dm3, that allows to evaluate it as unsuitable for micro-irrigation on the degree of influence on the elements of systems of drip irrigation. In addition, the deterioration of the surface water quality has been determined according to ecological-hygienic and ecological-toxicological indicators. The research has determined that surface waters in the basin of the Sarata River basically meet the III class of quality and are unsuitable for drip irrigation systems. The use of water of this quality is accompanied by the danger of irrigation salinization, alkalization of soil, as well as its toxic effects on plants. Such water may be used for drip irrigation systems only after carrying out appropriate water and soil reclamation. Its expediency should be confirmed by technical and economic calculations.
