Environmental Costs Of Economic Growth: Determinants of CO2 Emissions in Turkey and Iran

Journal Title: Journal of the Human and Social Science Researches - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 7

Abstract

In this study our aim is to identify and analyze the factors that are increasing or decreasing the CO2 emissions – the widely accepted reason of climate change and global warming – for the two superpowers of Middle East, Turkey and Iran over the period 1990-2011. In the first part of study, the decoupling factor (developed by Zhang (in 2000) and accepted as an indicator by OECD (in 2002)) have been used to examine the relationship between real GDP and CO2 emissions. After that, using the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method the major determining factors of CO2 emissions have been identified and analyzed. Empirical findings revealed that the economic activity and population are the major influencing factors of carbon emissions for both countries. For Iran, the energy intensity was the third major determining factor in carbon emissions, whereas it was the carbon intensity for Turkey. As a result, the empirical findings clarified that both countries should follow energy saving policies and diversify their energy matrices with renewable sources.
