EROSIVE WEAR KINETICS OF CLIMATE-AGED EPOXY COATINGS
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 246, Issue 6
Abstract
Erosive wear kinetics of epoxy coatings, previously aged with climatic factors, was examined. The maximum ageing period lasted 3 years. The examination was carried with a apparatus described in the Polish Standard PN -76/C-81516 enabling the free fall of abrasive material particles from 0.94 m height and hitting the coating surface at the angle α = 45°. As an abrasive material, granulated alunite was used of grain size 0.60-0.71 mm. For erosive wear intensity of epoxy coatings, Criterion I was used expressing a proportion of the coating thickness G to the total mass M of free falling erosive particles which erode the coating exposing the steel substrate surface of the ellipsoid shape with the minor diameter d = 3.6 ± 0.1 mm. As the object of examination, three-layer epoxy coatings of average thickness 155 μm were taken. They were applied on the surface of steel sheet samples of 160 x 80 x 2 mm dimensions. Ageing of coatings under the influence of climatic factors caused the destruction of their surface layers. Therefore, progressive decline of adhesion between the epoxy resin and the surface of pigments and fillers particles contributed to release of coating elements from the coating surface layers. This was the reason for a decrease in coating hardness and an increase in roughness and cause substantial “shine loss.” Furthermore, systematic thickness decreased with the extension of the ageing period, and progressive surface destruction of climate-aged epoxy coatings was observed which induced an increased intensity of coatings erosive wear with the lapse of ageing time. The erosive wear intensity increased 300% after three years of climate ageing.
