Estimation of Variance Components by Sex, Theoretical Expectation and Selection Implication for Weaning Weight in Indigenous Tuli Cattle of Zimbabwe
Journal Title: Journal of Animal Science Advances - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 1
Abstract
Weights of males and females in cattle can be considered to be correlated traits with different averages and variances. Pedigree records of weaning weight (WWT) (4090) composed of 1969 males and 2121 females born between 1983 and 1997 were analyzed to investigate heterogeneous variance by sex in Tuli cattle. Comparison of direct heriability estimates indicates moderate values for males (0.20±0.001) and females (0.30±0.001). The maternal additive variance accounted for 3 and 12 percent of total phenotypic variation for males and females as compared to 22 percent of pooled data. The genetic correlation estimates between direct and maternal effects were small and positive, 0.11 and 0.15 in males and females, respectively, compared to strong negative estimate –0.76 for pooled data. The permanent environmental effects as a proportion of the total phenotypic variance were less than 1% for both males and females. Total heritability estimates were higher (0.41) in males than in females as compared with 0.18 in the pooled data. There is homogeneity of variance by sex which do not warrant the partitioning of data by sex for genetic evaluation.
