Europe Facing Challenges: the Multiculturalism Dilemma

Abstract
Immigration is a process involving interactions and clashes between cultures, whereby cultural differences, some of them truly dramatic, come into play. The paper revolves around distinctiveness and foreigness in the perception of immigrants and touches upon the dilemmas surrounding the co-existence of multiple cultures. The most immediate barriers arise at the level of intercultural communication: Eurocentrism and ethnocentrism are key factors preventing the assimilation and adaptation of people flocking to countries perceived as safe. In addition, the acculturation process is impeded by emerging ethnic stereotypes. Islam, for example, is regarded by many as likely to generate conflicts, while others tend to see it as a cornerstone of multiculturalism. Mass media, being a major influence on the general public, represent another significant factor in shaping the image of immigrants.
