The Woman Question in Polish Bibliographies from the 19th Century to 1939

Abstract
The chapter seeks to investigate how the woman question was portrayed in Polish bibliographies prior to 1939 (chiefly drawing on Ludwik Finkl and Karol Estreicher’s works), including articles and bibliographies dedicated specifically to women’s literature (the bibliography of Zofia Zalewska, publications by the Polish Federation of University Women). In performing a comparative analysis of these works, the author sets out to demonstrate how the oldest bibliographical sources influenced the study of women’s history. To this end, their composition and indexes are examined to ascertain what kind of topics aroused the most interest. Bibliographies documenting women’s accomplishments in science seem to have been compiled, in the first place, in an effort to record their contribution to a given area. While older general bibliographies were primarily intended to save Polish culture from oblivion, their information content is a valuable compliment to other contemporary sources on women’s achievements.
