EVALUATION OF BODY POSTURE IN FIRST YEAR STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS IN KATOWICE

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. The problem of postural defects is one of the most important issues of the contemporary medicine. This is also a social problem due to its prevalence. The aim of this study was to determine the quality of body posture in anteroposterior deflection and in the frontal plane among first year students of the University of Economics in Katowice.Material and methods. The sample comprised 302 first year students of the University of Economics in Katowice, aged 19-21. The measurement of anteroposterior curvatures was made using Rippstein plurimeter, while the evaluation of body posture in the frontal plane was performed using Bertrand's test.Results. Postural defects in the sagittal and frontal plane occur in 97,4% of the examined first year students of the University of Economics in Katowice. Women are more prone to postural defects than men. There is a statistically significant difference between genders in the values of lordosis angle, being more prominent in women.Conclusions. Each university authorities should try as often as possible to subject the students to this kind of diagnostics as the students consciously choose motoric activities, which are frequently corrective or compensative. Promoting a healthy lifestyle by undertaking motoric activities since they are thought to have a favourable effect on posture correction, seems to be an inproper attitude, since its effects may prove adverse.
