Evaluation of Bone Marrow Examination in Thrombocytopenic subjects in a tertiary care hospital
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Bone marrow is concerned in hematological and non-hematological disorders, which are diagnosed by two separate but interrelated techniques viz. bone marrow aspiration (BMA) and bone marrow biopsy (BMB). Aim: The most important objective of this study was finding out the causes of hematological disorders by evaluating the bone marrow examination in various cases of thrombocytopenia. Study Design: Prospective study done at department of Pathology, GITAM institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Visakhapatnam from March 2017 to August 2018. Methods and Material: 50 patients of all age groups admitted in GIMSR Hospital, with haematological analysis of thrombocytopenia (<100 x 106/L) on peripheral smear were included in the study. Bone marrow aspiration examination was done in all the cases. Results and Conclusions: 68% patients had moderate thrombocytopenia (30-100 x 106/l) and 32% had severe thrombocytopenia (<30 x 106/L). Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (48%) was the commonest cause of thrombocytopenia. Other causes were acute lymphoblastic leukemias (6%), megaloblastic anaemia (14%), Acute myeloid leukemia(12%), bone marrow suppression (12%) and drug induced thrombocytopenia (8%). The age group studied was from 3-60 years with 79% of the patients having bleeding as chief complaint in the form of petechiae, ecchymosis and epistaxis. The bone marrow cellurality was hypercellular in 32%, hypocellular in 22%, and normocellular in 46%.
